The Centennial Regatta in 1971, which comemorated the race between the Paris Crew and James Renforth in 1871, took place on the Kennebecasis River. A rowing race between a team from England and a local crew was set but since Renforth didn't have a club the "local" team was from Halifax. This sparked the idea of forming a rowing club in Renforth. Since then the sport of rowing has become a major part of this small village.

The Kennebecasis Rowing and Canoe Club (K.R.C.C.) was formed in 1972 with the intention of producing top level oarsmen and women. The founders have certainly reached their goal.

Many successful oarsmen and women have woken up in the wee hours of the morning to train on the unpredictable waters of the Kennebecasis River. Through this site you can share in their disappointments and enjoy the glory of their successes.

There has been too much success and too many events to describe in this overview. Therefore only the earliest and most recent successes will be mentioned.

The Rowing Club's first international oarsman was Andrew Messer who began rowing in 1976 with Canada's successful national team after having begun his rowing career at the K.R.C.C. Mark and Dave Allan - the "Allan Brothers" were declared National Champions in 1977 while rowing for the K.R.C.C.

In 2000 Ed Winchester became a World Champion at an International Regatta in Croatia. The most recent event, before the creation of this web site in 2001, was the Canada Summer Games where two gold medals and one silver medal was won by K.R.C.C. oarsmen and women. Katie Reynolds and Mike Owens became gold medalists in the single sculling events. Andrew Munro and Drew Simson came second in the men's pairs race.

The Rothesay Living Museum staff were very lucky to be given the opportunity to speak with, and accompany the 2001 Canada Summer Games oarsmen and women on the water while they trained. It was definitely an eye opener for us. We hope that we have been able to portray the immense dedication and sacrifice the sport of rowing demands, through this web site.
