The Legacy Continues: Recent Rowers

There have been many people from the Saint John area who have rowed. Since 1971, one hundred years after James Renforth's death, rowing has become a big part of the communities of Rothesay and Quispamsis.

In 1971 no one from Saint John was rowing. A crew from Halifax came to race against a crew from England. The crew from Halifax won the race. The Centennial Regatta was a very big deal. Lots of people came to watch and people started to think that Renforth should start a club.

One year later a clubhouse was built. There was only one boat for the first year so not many people could row. The next year they bought more boats and more and more people started rowing.

In 1985 the Canada Summer Games were in Saint John. The rowing races took place in Renforth where in Paris Crew raced against James Renforth in 1871.

A lot of the New Brunswick rowers were very successful. Wayne MacFarlane and Chris Flood were the pair and they won gold. Doug Boyle and Tim Oland joined them to form a crew of four who also won gold. They also won the Renforth Cup at the Regatta that year.

The next famous rower was Ed Winchester from Renforth. Ed was very successful. He was on Canada's national team for five years straight. His biggest win was in Croatia at an International Regatta in 2000. He and another Canadian won the pairs race. They were the World Champions! Everyone was very excited.

The next year, 2001, was big because it was the Canada Summer Games. The men's rowing team came from the Saint John area. They were very excited to race. Michael Owens, a sculler from Rothesay, won the men's single sculls race. Andrew Munro, from Quispamsis, and Drew Simson, from Rothesay, won silver in the pairs race. Katie Reynolds, from Saint John, won the female's single sculls race.

Rowing is a very big part of these places. More rowers from here will become famous someday. Will it be you?
