Whilst the Legacy Slept: Hilton Belyea and Wallace Ross

After the time of the Paris Crew, rowing in Saint John became less popular. There weren't any crews who were as good as they were for a long time. Wallace Ross and Hilton Belyea were pretty good single scullers though.

Wallace Ross was born in 1855 in Saint John, New Brunswick. There is very little known about him.

Wallace Ross was a successful sculler. A sculler is a person who rows in a boat by himself. Wallace Ross won his first race in Saint John Harbour when he was 17 years old. When he was 26 he became famous in Canada for beating the Canadian Champion, Ned Hanlan.

On August 31, 1885 Hiliton Belyea was born in West Saint John. His first race was in 1904 as a part of a four-man boat that won the Tercentenary Regatta in Saint John. His family was very good at rowing. His Dad and his older brothers probably taught him to row. Hilton Belyea was a fisherman when he wasn't rowing.

Hilton Belyea was a sculler and he won his first sculling race in 1905 against another person from Saint John.

Hilton Belyea was not only a sculler. He was also a speed skater. He set world speed records and one hasn't been beaten yet.

Hilton Belyea was in a very bad accident when he was seventeen years old. He was riding his bike to his friend's house when he fell off and was knocked unconscious. He was hurt very badly and the doctor didn't think he would live. Hilton Belyea proved the doctor wrong. He also taught himself to walk again. This happened before he started rowing. He was very lucky.

He won his first international race in Boston on July 4, 1921. That race was called the New England Championships. After that race he kept winning and became more and more famous. Everyone liked to watch Hilton Belyea row because he was very good. They also liked to watch because Hilton used a homemade scull that his brother built him and weird oars. His oars were weird because they were larger than normal oars.

Hilton Belyea was also very old to be rowing. When a person is thirty-five they normally stop rowing in races. Since Hilton Belyea was away at the war he had to start rowing in races when he got back.

He won the Henley in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1921 and was named the Canadian Champion Sculler. He won the race by a lot and surprised everyone.

That summer he rowed in the Fiftieth Anniversary Regatta held in Renforth. It was the anniversary of James Renforth's death. Hilton Belyea won the sculling race.

A few years later Hilton Belyea was chosen to represent Canada in the 1924 Olympics in Paris. Before the Olympics he became very sick. The disease he had made his legs hurt. At the Olympics he had to be lowered into the boat by a sling because his legs really hurt. He didn't win the race but everyone thought he was very brave. They even gave him a bronze medal because of his bravery.

Over the years Hilton Belyea won a lot of races. He had a large collection of medals and trophies.

Hilton Belyea died on January 6, 1968 in Albany, New York.
