Rothesay rower qualifies for finals

Making Waves: Katie Reynolds will compete for medals in three different events after her strong showing yesterday at the Canada Summer Games.

LONDON, Ont. - The performance of Katie Reynolds highlighted yesterday's Canada Summer Games action among local athletes.

The Rothesay rower has a shot at three medals after advancing in the finals in three separate events. She won her heat in the women's singles with a time of 8:04.23.

She also finsihed first in the women's straight quads with teammates Meghan Hartlen and Laura Penny of Rothesay and Anne-Marie Skillen of New Maryland. They move on the final after posting a time of 7:05.90.

Reynolds and Skillen teamed up in the women's pairs without cox. They finished fourth in the repechage, which earned them a berth in the final.

In men's four without cox, Mike Owens, Ryley Greene and Drew Simson of Rothesay along with Andrew Munro of Quispamsis qualified for the final after finishing second in the repechage.

On Monday, Owens won his men's singles heat and earned an automatic trip to the final.

In men's pairs, Munro and Simson placed second with a time of 7:12.43. They qualified for the repechage.

New Brunswick men's quads team, consisting of Jadan Harding of Dipper Harbour, Michael Thorne of Rothesay, Saint John's Kamil Sheikh and Adam Bliss of Durham Bridge, finished fifth with a time of 6:38.76.

In the men's eights, a team of primarily local athletes finished third in 6:30.96. Duncan Beattie of Rothesay, Joel Mazerolle of Saint John, Greene, Owens, Ian Edwards of Rothesay, Simson, Munro and Fredericton's Daniel Malone along with coxswain April Nason of Saint John were in the boat.

In yesterday's repechage events, Beattie and Malone finished fifth in men's pairs without cox and qualified for the consolation.

In women's quads, Hartlen, Penny, Jaime Peyton of Rusagonis and Laura Kennettle of Fredericton finished third and qualified for the consolation.

"We had a very good day on the water so I'm happy," said N.B. rowing coach Tracy Fraser. "We're focused on doing what we have to do to get to the finals."
