Owens moves on

LONDON, Ont. - The Canada Summer Games got off to a terrific start for Mike Owens.

The Rothesay rower finished first in his heat to advance to the finals in the men's singles here yesterday.

Owens completed the Fanshawe Lake layout in a time of 7:29.51, giving him a five-second victory over a British Columbia rival.

Owens later joined fellow Rothesay rowers Drew Simson and Ryley Greene along with Andrew Munro of Quispamsis in the men's four without.

They placed fourth in 6:42.82.

In the women's pair without, Saint John's Katie Reynolds and Anne-Marie Skillen of New Maryland were third in 8:14.98.

Rothesay's Meghan Hartlen and Laura Penny were part of the women's quadruples squad - Jaime Peyton of Rusagonis and Laura Kennettle of Fredericton were the other team members - that finished fifth with a time of 7:38.96.

Duncan Beattie of Rothesay and Dan Malone of Fredericton finished fourth in their heat in the men's pairs. They had a time of 7:33.30.

The repechage heats were postponed until tonight.
