Renforth Presents Cheque

Renforth became the first outlying community to make a donation to the Saint John Canada Games Society, as Mayor Tony McGuire presented a cheque for $5,000 to the society Saturday at the opening, of the boat house at the site of the Canada Games rowing events, in Renforth.

The $5,000 is only the first installment on a total of. $17,000 the village will give in facilities, services and cash, Mayor McGuire said. Because the community is going to benefit from the Canada Games facilities, especially the boating facilities in Renforth, Mayor McGuire said the village is "jumping on board as good citizens of the area," noting that the contribution was passed unanimously by council.

Mel Vincent, Saint John councilor and Canada Games Society vice president in charge of municipal affairs, accepted the cheque and congratulated the village for being the first of the eight neighboring communities the society hopes will contribute to the games and "show the spirit as well as the cash."

Although Renforth is the first, bordering municipality to "come on stream," Mr. Vincent said one other community has agreed in principle to contribute and more are expected to follow. "We hope others will take the lead from Renforth.

Because the games were awarded to the Saint John area and because of the large federal and provincial funding of the venues, the outlying municipalities have the "right to use the facilities like everyone else," said Mr. Vincent, adding that the Renforth donation is a reflection of the shared responsibility and ultimately the shared, benefits of next summer's games.
