Renforth racers are bringing home gold

Brian Flood and Rick Cassidy, both of Renforth, have been on the sculling circuit this summer, picking up gold medals to bring home to their Kennebecasis Rowing and Canoeing Club in Renforth.

Brian won gold medals at the U.S. National Champion- ships in San Fransisco in the junior light weight single and the senior light weight single categories. The gold in the senior competition makes him a senior single, sculler, no longer able to compete in junior classes.

According to Stephen Flood, Brian’s brothers, who is sidelined for the summer following a back operation, your senior status in rowing or sculling is attained once you win a national champion- ship, but not before.

Brian and Stephen Flood have competed together for years in rowing competitions and have won three national championships, making them senior rowers. Now Brian is senior in both rowing and sculling.

According to Stephen, scullers use two oars and rowers use one oar. Of course there cannot be single rowers, they must compete at least in pairs. Scullers can compete singly.

Rick Cassidy travelled to Philadelphia to compete in the regatta in that city. It is the largest and most prestigious in the U.S. after the national championships. Usually it is held the week before the national competition, but a problem rescheduled it to the same week as the national this year. Therefore some of the great racers went to San Fransisco for the nationals, and others went to Philadelphia.

Rick won a gold medal there in the junior light weight single class.

Rick and Brian are seniors at the Kennebecasis Rowing and Canoe Club. They, with members of the junior teams, will be competing in races in St. Catharine’s, Ontario and at the Canadian National Competition in Montreal.
