Local Rowers Win

FREDERICTON - The Kennebecasis Rowing Club, led by its men's open four crews, captured the fifth annual Fredericton Rowing Regatta held Sunday here on the St. John River.

The Kennebecasis group finished in first place in the event, which doubled as the Eastern Canada championship. They accumulated 38 points, well ahead of second place Dartmouth, which finished second with 25 and Fredericton which took third with 16 points.

The men's open four crew of John Allen, Rick Cassidy and Brian and Henry Flood of Kennebecasis qualified for the national championships August 1-2 in Montreal and for the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta August 5 in St. Catherines. Ont., with their performance this weekend.

They won the men's open four competition with a time of 3:40.3 seconds, easily meeting the 4:10 standard for the national meet. The race was over 1,000 metres.

Another crew with a chance to compete at the nationals is the women's four with cox from Fredericton.

The crew, consisting of Lachelle Brewer, Bettey Demers, Karen Fraser and Mary Kay Stangroom with Rosemay Pierce as cox won their particular event in 4:36.8 seconds, beating a crew from Kennebecasis by two-tenths of a second.

However, Demers pulled a muscle in her leg and the crew will again have to qualify for the nationals before August 1.

Other races saw the Kennebecasis pairs crew of the Flood brothers record a time of 3:57.3 over 1,000 metres to win that event.

Kennebecasis won the mixed four in 1:57.3 over 500 metres, finishing ahead of Dartmouth, Fredericton and a second crew from Kennebecasis.

In the 1,000-metre men's eight, Kennebecasis prevailed in 3:27.5, finishing ahead of Dartmouth and Fredericton.

In the 1,000-metre women's pair, it was Kennebecasis first followed by Dartmouth and Fredericton.

In the 500-metre women's eight, Kennebecasis was first in 2:1 5.0 with Fredericton second.

Capturing the Labatt's Trophy was the Kennebecasis men's open fours while the Fredericton women's four with cox was winner of the Royal Bank Trophy.
