Kennebecasis Places Third
Montreal - A Kennebecasis Rowing Club team finished third Sunday in the four-man coxless rowing final at the first annual Montreal International Regatta held here on the weekend.
The regatta served as a dress rehearsal for Olympic facilities here.
The team of brothers Mark and David Allan, Stephen Gaunce and Wayne McConnell, all of Saint John, finished behind first-place New Zealand and runner-up United States teams.
Gaunce and McConnell combined to finish fourth in the coxless-pairs final also held Sunday.
The Fredericton pair of Bob Lively and Greg Gilks was eliminated In the coxless-pairs’ heats Saturday.
In the four-man final, the Allan Brothers, Gaunce and McConnell posted a time of 7:13.54 over the 20000-metre course. The New Zealand team won with a clocking of 6:36.85, while the U.S. quartet had a time of 6:40.07.
In the coxless-pairs final, Gaunce and McConnell posted a time of 8:17.47, in finishing behind the winning U.S. team who recorded a winning time of 7:20.69.
A team from Upper Canada College in Toronto was second in 7:25.72. New Zealand was third in 7:41.09.
