Silver Medal For Regatta Pair

Flood Brothers Stir Up Only Waves For NB

Brothers Henry and Brian Flood of the Kennebecasis Rowing Club were the only New Brunswickers who picked up a medal at the recently completed Royal Canadian Henley Regatta at St. Catherines, Ont.

Competing in the senior lightweight pairs, the Floods took a silver in the final, finishing 2.06 seconds behind the winners from Ecorse, Michigan. In the final, the Floods beat out a Brockville, Ont., team which had won national, Henley and world championship medals before.

Ten of the 19 members of the N.B. team came from the Kennebecasis Club. The women's lightweight coxed four included Carolyn Demers, Denise Pelletier, Carla and Elizabeth Vandeberg, and coxswain Leane McFarlane.

The women's lightweight pair consisted of Maureen Floyd and Kathy Webb. Rick Cassidy was in the 145 pound singles sculling event.

Keith Ratcliffe was the provincial coach while the assistants were Andy Messer and Kim Norris.

The Flood brothers also joined with the Brockville team and took a bronze in the international FISA fours race.

At the national championships, which were held prior to the 100th Henley, the Floods defeated the Brockville team to take the gold medal.

Over 2,000 athletes and 18 countries took part at the Henley Regatta, known as the most prestigious of all rowing events in North America.

The Floods were the only members of the N.B. team to race in the senior class. The others took part in the junior class. The Floods received that honor after winning the junior Canadian Henley last year.

A Fredericton women's coxed four was the only N.B. junior team to reach the finals at the Henley Regatta, where it eventually placed fourth.

At the national championships, Cassidy picked up a fourth place finish in the sculling.
