Makes Rowing Final

ST. CATHERINES, Ont. - Fifteen year old Andrew Boyles of the Kennebecasis Rowing Club has advanced to the final in the junior men's 135-pound singles rowing event here at the Royal Canadian Henley international Rowing Championship Wednesday after he placed second behind a Durham, N. C. entrant in one of two qualifying heats.

Boyles, who, is coached by his grandfather Ron Ingraham (a prominent rower in the Saint John area 30 years ago), posted a time of eight minutes, 6.31 seconds while the Durham native had a clocking of seven minutes 44.41 seconds

Boyles will be one of four boats participating in the final tonight.

Two other rowing teams from New Brunswick are also involved in the championships but both were eliminated in their qualifying heats. Brothers Brian and Henry Flood of Kennebecasis Rowing Club placed third in their junior men's 155 pound pairs event with a time of seven minute, 24.46 seconds. The top two in their heat qualified and they missed second place by three seconds. A Minneapolis entry placed first in 7:20.46 while a Crescent, Mich. entry was second at 7:21.46.

The other New Brunswick team was a junior women's pairs team of Rachelle Brewer and Mary-Kay Stangroom of Fredericton Rowing Club. They finished second in their heat behind Western University of London, Ontario who had a time of 4:04.79. The Fredericton team was clocked at 4:07.29 but only the first place team qualified for the final.

Canada, United States, Australia and Mexico are the countries involved in the championships with a total of 1,246 athletes from 73 different clubs taking part in the five day affair.
