Kennebecasis Rowers Dominate
Members of the Kennebecasis Rowing Club of Quispamsis near Saint John made their mark at the fifth annual Fredericton Rowing Regatta held yesterday on the St. John River.
The competition doubled as the Eastern Canadianchampionships featuring 27 crews from Kennebecasis, Dartmouth-Halifax and Fredericton.
Most outstanding of the Kennebecasis rowers were the men’s open four of Brian and Henry Flood, John Allen and Rick Cassidy which qualified for the national championships August 14 in Montreal and the prestigious Royal Canadian Henley, Regatta August 5 in St. Catharines, Ont.
The Kennebecasis four won the men’s open four in a time of 3:40.3, easily meeting the 4:10 standard for the national event. It was over 1,000 metres.
Fredericton’s crew of John O’Keeffe, Kim Norris, Brian Smythe and Ian Pineau placed third.
Another crew with a chance to compete nationally is the women's four with coxswain from Fredericton Rowing Club.
The crew, consisting of Lachelle Brewer, Betty Demers, Karen Fraser, and Mary Kay Stangroom with Rosemary Pierce the cox won its particular event in 4:36.8, beating the Kennebecasis crew by two-tenths of a second.
However, Demers pulled a muscle in her leg and thus, the crew will have to qualify again by August 1 if it is to compete nationally. The qualifying, time is 4:10 over 1,000-metres.
Other races yesterday saw the Kennebecasis pairs (Flood brothers) record a time of 3:57.3 over 1,000 metres in the men’s pairs competition. A second Kennebecasis team was second with Fredericton’s pair of O’Keeffe and Norris third.
In the novice open four Dartmouth placed first in 2:12.8 over 500 metres with Fredericton second.
Kennebecasis won the mixed four in 1:57.3 over 500 metres, finishing ahead of Dartmouth, Fredericton and a second crew from Kennebecasis.
In the 1,000 metre men’s eight, Kennebecasis prevailed in 3.27.5, finishing ahead of Dartmouth and Fredericton. Making up the local crew were Smythe, Mark Allen, Norm Demers, Dave Allen, Pineau, O’Keeffe, Norris and Peter Gilchrist.
In the 1000-metre women’s pair, it was Kennebecasis first followed by Dartmouth and Fredericton’s pair of Flora Livesey and Leslie Eglington.
Dartmouth won the men’s fours with cox in 4:00.3 followed by Dartmouth, Kennebecasis and Fredericton’s team of Allen, O’Keeffe, Norris, Pineau and Pierce as the cox.
In the 500-metre women’s eight, Kennebecasis was first in 2:15.0 with Fredericton second.
Capturing the Labatt’s Trophy was the Kennebecasis men’s open fours while the Fredericton team women’s four with cox was winner of the Royal Bank Trophy.
