Rothesay's Ed Winchester will receive a belated hero's welcome on Friday when he is honoured at a reception, along with partner Ben Storey Whitehorse, by Rowing Canada for their accomplishment at the World Rowing Championship in August in Zagreb, Croatia.

The national annual general meeting, is being hosted by the Fredericton Rowing Club, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Winchester and Storey combined to win the gold medal in the light-weight men's pair competition in the non-Olympic meet. The two then went on to represent Canada as spares at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

An awards ceremony to recognize Canada's top rowers, including Storey and Winchester, will be held on Saturday at the Wu Conference Centre during the annual banquet.

Another highlight will be a camp for local athletes with National Team coaches, including Al Morrow. Morrow's women's eight won an Olympic bronze medal, Canada's only rowing medal in Sydney.

Morrow will be part of a new Canadian coaching team, which will include some of the world's top rowing coaches, headed by Australian Brian Richardson.

In Fredericton, delegates from across the country will attend committee meetings held during the weekend. Issues include increasing membership, sport development and funding. An election for the vice-president of high performance will take place during the Sunday business meeting.

The three candidates are Bruce 'Robertson of Calgary, Bill Donegan, and Joe Dowd - both of St. Catharines, Ont. The VP of high performance, a volunteer post, oversees the national team program.
