LUCERNE, Switzerland - Rothesay's Ed Winchester, a member of the Kennebecasis Rowing and Canoe Club, and his Canadian teammates earned a silver in the men's lightweight eights event at the final World Cup rowing regatta of the season yesterday.

Winchester and the rest of the Canadian crew - Erik Oinonen of Thunder Bay, Ont., Matt McCarthy of Peterborough, Ont., Anthony Shearing of Toronto, Jeff Lay of London, Ont., Trevor Peterson of Pickering, Ont., Graham McLaren of Victoria, B.C., Ben Storey of Whitehorse and Dave Boyes of St. Catharines, Ont. - finished 1.3 seconds behind the winning Italians, who had a winning time of 5:46.65.

"In all, we were fairly pleased with how, things went," Winchester said. "But it's more of a kick in the pants for the rest of the summer. We can improve in lots of areas and we'll have to if we want to win the worlds this summer in St. Catharines.

"After a half-decent start, we gave the Italians too much in the second 500 metres and it was too much ground to make up - we did have the fastest 1,000 metres in the whole field, though."
