The 1985 Canada Summer Games: Still Giving

It was two weeks of sunshine, two weeks of outstanding athleticism and, hey, two weeks that just keeps on giving.

Although a generation in Saint John and surrounding areas wasn't born in 1985, the amazingly successful Canada Summer Games we proudly hosted lives on to this day.

Considering there's the Canada Games Aquatic Centre, the Canada Games Stadium, improved tennis courts, better all-around facilities and, well, yes even Festival By the Sea, the nation's arrival on our doorstep 14 summers ago hasn't finished giving back.

Specifically, giving back financially.

The Canada Summer Games made a profit of $2,125,000 back then and the interest from that tidy amount is now spread out to deserved athletes.

The total from the latest approved chapter was $168,378 - year end 1998 - and from that pot, $105,650 was awarded to 101 athletes and coaches froffi7l9 different organizations leading in to this year.

James MacMurray was a fund raiser and president of the Canada Summer Games' board of directors in 1985 and looks fondly back on the project - which was a massive undertaking - that made financial gains.

"It was a bonus to get that money, but we had a certain goal in mind when we went into it and we exceeded that goal," MacMurray said. "We ended up with a surplus and the income from that total is allowing us to provide grants to athletes, coaches and clubs."

The Canada Summer Games Foundation advertises its grant availabilities and awards monies to athletes in the spring and fall.

The foundation works very close with veteran New Brunswick Canada Games' Chef de Mission Suzanne Mason of Fredericton when it comes time to screening applicants. Mason has a grasp on the province's athletes and MacMurray called her input to the project as "the one who answers our questions." The grants are available to athletes in all provinces, but one look at the recipients tells you New Brunswick - and many from our local area - are the major benefactors.

"Our grants are open to anybody in Canada and there is no age stipulation," MacMurray said. "We do try [to allot funds] to develop athletes and coaching, so it tends to go toward younger athletes. "

The latest round of grants were passed out last month and the foundation now sets its sites on the fall for the next benefit from the 1985 sporting event.

"It's all one of the benefits of having the Canada Games, all the residuals that are left," MacMurray said. "It's all spread out around the city. It [1985] was a great, great, great time."

It still is for those athletes garnering some additional funding in order to perhaps attend a Canada Games or other national or international competitions.
