ROWING NOTES, 1974

Again the objective of the club has been the development of junior oarsmen, at the schoolboy level largely, and again the response has been good. Serious training began in February with weights and running. Work on the water began in mid-April.

Shortage of equipment (boats) is a serious problem for any club. To help overcome this, the club ordered two pairs (one convertible to a double, i.e. two oars per man). These boats were ordered from Donoratico (Italian) as Canadian builders could not supply until September as opposed to mid-April for the foreign craft. Unfortunately delivery has not been made yet (July 7th though it is understood the boats will be in Montreal July 8th).

Arrival of these boats is too late to be of much use this year. This has meant some would-be oarsmen have had to stand on the beach while others had seats in the boats. Inevitably they have tended to drift away. Once a crew is made up, it trains strenuously as a team and for as long periods as possible. This means doubling up on a boat is virtually impossible. Until the club has more equipment, this difficulty will persist, but with the new pairs, things will be much better.

This year a light four has been formed (145 lbs) as well as a heavy. Both crews will go to the Canadian Henley and each will compete in two events, straight and coxed fours. Alas no pairs this time.

The Club is most grateful to those many people who have supported it. With the new equipment they have made possible, new and greater progress will be made.
